A young creative writer with autism is using his skills as a wordsmith to raise money for three environmental charities, with the support of staff from the residential village where he lives.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar. 1, 2012 - Richard Harvey is no ordinary teenager. Unlike many others at his young age of 19 years, Richard, who has autism, has recently penned his first novel. The fictional short story tells of the parallel world of Elgasel and the struggles of its ruler, King Gusma against his evil son Prince Barnwalle. Richard, who has always loved creative writing, has been supported and encouraged by the staff who provide autism support at Low Laithes Village, a purpose built residential centre for young adults run by the Hesley Group.

The Hesley Group, the experts in autism care, have been helping people with special needs since 1975, providing a safe environment and individually tailored care. Their aim is to provide autism care homes and specialist autism education centres to help people with special needs, like Richard, to achieve their full potential. The Groups focus on treating autism combines first class facilities with experienced, knowledgeable staff, mixing care, education, encouragement and positive therapies to help each person in their care develop skills and independence.

The autism support staff who work closely with Richard at the Low Laithes Village, have recognised and nurtured his creative writing talents during his time there. And it is their encouragement and support that has helped him to reach his aspirations of becoming a writer. His book, called Other Worldly, can be purchased from ‘Handmade for You’ in Tickhill, a social enterprise run by supported individuals and staff from the Hesley Village, as well as from Low Laithes Village, with all proceeds going to charity. Richard decided he wanted to donate monies from the sale of his book to a number of charities that protect the environment including Bugs Life, World Wildlife Trust and The Woodland Trust. On explaining his decision Richard said, “I have chosen the charities as they all raise money to look after the world.”

Like all the residents who receive support or autism education from The Hesley Group, Richard takes part in plenty of activities including keeping fit at the gym and heading out on his bike. However, his true love is fictional writing and with the continuing encouragement of the autism support team he plans to write more novels in the future.
