March 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Benalmadena could be said to be the quintessential Spanish village. Perched atop a hillside above the azure blue Mediterranean Sea, it dates back to the time of the Moors, with the whitewashed buildings and narrow cobbled streets that are typical of that era. The village also has an impressive bullring, popular among locals and visitors with a taste for ‘the Real Spain’. For those who prefer something a little more pleasing on the senses, Benalmadena has other delights on offer.
Jean Joss has been a resident of Benalmadena for many years and has a lot to recommend visitors to the area. Writing on Spanish news website thenewsonline.es, Jean had high praise for a number of tourist attractions in and around the village. For example, just a short walk from the village centre is the Castillo de Colomares. This curious building boasts a mix of architectural styles and is dedicated to the discovery of America. The Castillo also includes the smallest church in the world, built only a few decades ago in the late 1980’s by local bricklayers, under instruction from the wildly imaginative Dr Esteban Martin.
One marketing firm agrees with Jean Joss’ recommendations. Support Real may be based in Madrid but they can wholeheartedly recommend the splendour of Benalmadena. “This village is a joy to visit,” said a source within the firm. “The classic Spanish pueblo, with everything the visitor would associate with Spain, plus a taste of magic in the air to make it that little bit special.”
There is a unique blend of religions and cultures in the village as well. Look up to the village from the coast and you’ll spot the Benalmadena Stupa, a dazzling white statue which at thirty-three metres high is said to be the largest Buddhist monument in the western world. The statue is filled with sacred objects which have been sealed in special treasure chambers until the end of time, and there is also a large meditation room within, decorated with murals depicting the life story of the Buddha Sakyamui. On any day except Monday, the Stupa is open to visitors and all are welcome. Many visitors – including the source at Support Real – have said the Stupa was simply breathtaking and well worth a visit, regardless of what your own religious standing may be.
A butterfly farm – the ‘Mariposario’ – is the most recent attraction to open in the area, home to the largest climate controlled space dedicated to butterflies in Europe, a two thousand square metre park housing thousands of beautiful and delicate butterflies, along with a dazzling display of orchids.
“There is so much to do in the village,” said Support Real’s source, and indeed there is not enough room here to list all the fine reasons for visiting Benalmadena. “The only way is to go there, to experience the sights, the splendour. Then you will find out why Benalmadena is undoubtedly the jewel of Andalusia.
