Now in its 8th year, The Encinitas Guitar Orchestra is a community-based acoustic, classical guitar ensemble consisting of 25 to 30 local guitarists of all ages.
“We choose a different theme for each session. Because The Eagles’ most famous song “Hotel California” is based on a famous Flamenco chord progression, we thought we’d blend the Spanish guitar theme with Eagles repertoire and its guitar based sound,” Pupping said. The orchestra performs June 1.
Songs include Hotel California and Seven Bridges Road by The Eagles, and Hymne-aux Forets and For Salva, traditional Spanish pieces. Other music will be added, including a Latin piece arranged by orchestra member Keith Van Zandt.
The Encinitas Guitar Orchestra is one of few community guitar orchestras in the country. Amateur guitarists from beginner through advanced level perfect their playing skills, learn new music, and enjoy the camaraderie of playing in an ensemble. Members are also invited to perform solos and pieces arranged for duets, trios and quartets.
“The Encinitas Guitar Orchestra is a true jewel in our area,” Pupping said. “For most amateur classical and acoustic guitarists, practicing is a solo pursuit and there aren’t many opportunities to perform. The orchestra gives everyone a chance to improve their skills and show off what they do.”
