Feb. 28, 2012 - PRLog -- A steady provider of work for the city, region and country: Messe Frankfurt is responsible for some 32,500 jobs

Every year, events at Messe Frankfurt generate sales of €3.1 billion across Germany

Ifo study on indirect profitability highlights the economic significance of Messe Frankfurt for the city of Frankfurt, the federal state of Hesse and for the whole of Germany Messe Frankfurt safeguards around 32,500 jobs in Germany, of which some 18,700 are based in Frankfurt itself. This is evident from a study on the indirect profitability of Messe Frankfurt conducted by the Ifo Institute for Economic Research, an independent institute at Munich University. According to the study, it is hotels and restaurants, skilled labour and event service providers who benefit most of all from trade fairs and exhibitions. At the official presentation of the study findings, Frankfurt Mayor Petra Roth declared: “Messe Frankfurt is a valuable job engine and, in the same way as our airport, is instrumental in attracting people to Frankfurt and the federal state of Hesse”.

National purchasing power effect through Frankfurt-based trade fairs “Events at Messe Frankfurt generate immense purchasing power of €3.1 billion. This gives a substantial economic boost not only to Frankfurt and its surrounding region, but further afield as well”, explained Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Messe Frankfurt. Of this figure, €1.6 billion benefits the local economy in Frankfurt, €600 million in Hesse and €900 million in the remaining federal states of Germany. The increase in purchasing power brought about by Messe Frankfurt’s activities gives rise to additional tax revenues of €567 million, €29 million of which is attributable to Frankfurt, and €159 million to the rest of Hesse.

The purchasing power generated by Messe Frankfurt has grown by 19% over the past ten years. This can be seen by comparing the latest figures with the findings of the corresponding Ifo study from 2000. As Marzin explains: “One of the main reasons for this is the increase in the number of our international visitors and exhibitors – they stay longer in Frankfurt and therefore spend more money here”.

Companies benefit from Messe Frankfurt
On average, every trade fair visitor spends around €450 on accommodation, retail purchases and travel to and from Frankfurt. This means that visitors to Frankfurt events spend more than their counterparts at other German exhibition venues. Visitors to international trade fairs in Germany spend around €270.1 And, of course, exhibitors’ expenditure must also be taken into account: a total of €1.46 billion is spent on trade fairs in Frankfurt in order to be able to showcase companies and their products to an international audience. Marzin: “Be it taxi companies, gentlemen’s outfitters or logistics providers – Messe Frankfurt is not only an export platform for the whole world, but also helps many companies in the region to boost and stabilise their revenue”. The economic effects triggered by visitors to and exhibitors at Frankfurt’s trade fairs are not matched by any other exhibition venue in Germany. Marzin: “The study findings surpassed our own expectations. We are delighted to see the economic benefits of our trade fairs being confirmed so emphatically, particularly for Frankfurt and its surrounding region. As an export platform for Germany and the world, Messe Frankfurt can therefore be said to play a crucial role in
promoting business.”

As the company is not subsidised with taxpayers’ money, Messe Frankfurt’s success is due entirely to its own organic business performance. As Petra Roth sums up: “This means that our trade fair company is a shining example for other businesses, even when the economic climate is difficult”.
