Khidmah reduces costs and “go green” by implementing bottle-free water dispensers

Feb. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Clean safe drinking water is vital for human health and a key part of any FM business is to provide an adequate supply of drinking water for staff members, residents and their clients. The majority of drinking water is provided by using 5 gallon or single use plastic bottles which is costly not only to the environment but also on an administrative and operational level for many FM providers.

Liquid of Life, a leading provider of sustainable drinking water solutions recently concluded a project with Khidmah LLC, an award winning full service, integrated property services company A number of point-of-use water purifiers/dispensers were implemented in several sites across Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al Ain thus allowing Khidmah to provide a healthier alternative to plastic bottled water and to reduce their operational costs.

“As a property services company, one of our roles is to provide optimum solutions to our clients. This initiative has enabled us in not only saving cost for our clients but also helped in bringing sustainability to the environment to some extent,” said Abdulla Al Qamzi, Managing Director of Khidmah.

Rukhsana Kausar, the Founding Partner of Liquid of Life explains, “The team at Khidmah was already committed to reviewing solutions to reduce their plastic bottle water consumption which amounted to using hundreds of 5 gallon bottles across various sites every month. We conducted a feasibility study based on current plastic bottled water costs and drinking water consumption levels and provided a solution to implement bottle-free water purifier/dispenser units, which are connected to the existing municipality supply. The water is then purified, mineralized and then kept heated and chilled ready to be dispensed for drinking. There is therefore no need to order, store, and dispose of plastic bottles anymore. It’s hassle free and the units provide fresh filtered water at the point of use. As a result, operational and administrative costs associated with providing plastic bottled drinking water are considerably reduced”

The units use filters that are sourced from the US and are specifically tested and accredited by NSF (National Science Foundation) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) to ensure that the quality of the water dispensed is high and remains consistent.

The return on investment on the capital expenditure of purchasing and installing the units was under 12 months when compared against the actual cost of plastic bottled water. The ongoing running costs, which include filter changes every 10,000 liters and maintenance of the units provided an annual saving of 88% against the previous cost of plastic bottled water.  Furthermore, as a result of implementing the units, Khidmah have reduced their carbon footprint by 21.6 tons, which was associated with their plastic bottled water consumption.  


The sites now using the eco-friendly, cost effective sustainable water filtration systems include the Sun and Sky Towers on Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, Al Oyoun Village in Al Ain, Oceana on The Palm in Dubai as well as the Khidmah head office in Abu Dhabi.
