Feb. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- M1 Garand Rifle Hard Chrome Lined Gas Cylinder

The last gas cylinder you will ever need for your M1 Garand rifle is now available from www.GarandGuy.com.    The durability of hard chrome is well established.  (Chrome lined barrels have three times the longevity of standard steel barrels.)  A chrome lined gas cylinder is long overdue, especially with the NOS parts all but gone.  Previously, if your gas cylinder was worn out and you weren't lucky enough to find a 60 year old unused replacement part, your only option to reliably restore function was to bore your cylinder oversize and install a new larger gas piston on your operating rod.   This remains a pricey operation, alters your rifle from its original mechanical specifications and precludes any future parts interchangeability with original mil-spec parts.

Even with new mil-spec parts, it only takes about .002 of wear between the piston and cylinder walls to effect function, and that is assuming the parts are at the optimum end of their manufacturing tolerance.

Most importantly, for long life and precise function, these hard chromed cylinders have a bore diameter of .528 +.0005 which puts them within no more than .0005" of the minimum inside diameter specified for the part.   Even the original gas cylinders were rarely that tight.  That degree of precision was one of the criteria for selecting the gas cylinders for national match rifles!  These hard chromed cylinders have a glassy smooth inside finish with no visible tooling marks and they are very consistent through the length of the bore unlike the original parts which varied up to .001", always showed reaming marks and often deep scratching from chips caught up in the cutting tool during manufacture.

Save the NOS parts for the collector pieces.   You can now repair your rifle with an enhanced original part.   The Garand Guy's hard chromed gas cylinder is the best available repair option for any rifle you intend to shoot.  Since it is a refurbished and enhanced original GI part, it is guaranteed to fit.   Remember, the gas cylinder itself is only one third of the M1 Rifle's gas system and changing a single part cannot guarantee restored function.  However, since this hard chrome lined cylinder is at the minimum inside diameter, it may extend the functional life of your operating rod's worn gas piston.  If you still have gas leakage problems after installing this gas cylinder, you know your problem lies with your operating rod piston or lock plug.

These fine parts are available mail order only direct from The Garand Guy.  You can order by phone at 732-388-1962 or online from his website at www.GarandGuy.com.   They cost $54.99 delivered if you send in you old gas cylinder as a core.   If you don't want to send in your old part they cost $64.99 delivered which is still cheaper, and certainly more confidence inspiring, than ordering one of the supposedly NOS parts from Europe or Canada.

One final note regarding finish.  This cylinder's exterior finish is a uniform black.  A special stainless steel bluing compound is used on them and it is more durable than the original GI finish.   If you want to insure a uniform finish on your lock plug, sight and stacking swivel, send these parts and they will be exchanged with newly finished parts that match the black finish on your new gas cylinder at no charge.    The gas cylinders are also available unfinished, in-the-white, for those wishing to finish their own.
