Ford of Murfreesboro names Rutherford County Sheriff’s Corporal “Officer of the Month”

Feb. 21, 2012 - PRLog -- Corporal Greg Wasson, who convinced a suicidal man not to end his own life, is presented an engraved watch and is named “officer of the Months” by Owner/General Manager David Lee of Ford of Murfreesboro.  Ford of Murfreesboro presents the “Officer of the Month” award to an outstanding officer chosen by Rutherford County Sheriff’s office.

Training Capt. Steve Spence, who nominated Corporal Wasson, said the corporal responded to a call Dec. 22 where a man on East Gum Road told officers he wanted to die. The man was armed with a handgun and kept it at his side. He made statements several times he wanted to die or wanted the officers to kill him.

Corporal Wasson negotiated with the man for two hours. During the negotiations, the man received calls on his cell phone that made the negotiations more difficult. After the man’s phone service was cut off, Corporal Wasson began face-to-face conversations with him.

“Corporal Wasson was able to persuade the man to place his weapon down and give up to the officers,” Spence said. “Corporal Wasson’s outstanding negotiations saved the man’s life.”
