Is Your Coffee Break Giving You Cavities

Most people understand that eating candy and sweet things is likely to cause them tooth decay and cavities. The fact is though as we get older and join the workforce, coffee breaks is one of the biggest causes of adult dental problems.

Feb. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- “It’s not just the sticky doughnuts and the bars of candy that are drilling little holes in adult’s teeth, “explains Dr. Myron Kellner of The Smile Design Center of Dr. Myron Kellner on Joppa Rd. “When we buy those giant macchiatos in Starbuck’s we’re actually drinking two to three teaspoons of raw sugar, plus the sugar in the whipped cream and the syrup on top.

You may as well coat your teeth in glucose and call it a day!”

And if the macciatos don’t get you, then there’s a good chance the shakes, cakes and sugary iced teas will.

But it’s not all bad news, warns the dentist who has been treating patients in Baltimore for over 20 years. It is still possible to have your coffee break and enjoy it too.

“Use sweeteners instead of demarera (unrefined, golden colored sugar) to keep the rot off your teeth (and the weight off your waist),” recommends Dr. Kellner. “And stick to espresso – neat if you can handle it!”
