When asked why, owner Master Mikel Steenrod responded, "FJA already has a solid academic and P.E. program. However, like other Arizona schools it has suffered due to dramatic underfunding. I wanted to provide the kids with an opportunity to train in a top quality martial arts program, and to get additional physical training with a top strength coach."
The 70 students of FJA will be broken into small groups and get instruction in 3 major areas:
Kung Fu, with Master Mikel Steenrod. He will emphasize body control, learning to focus emotions, and classic kung fu.
Arnis, with Coach David Semanas. He will teach kids the fundamentals of Filipino stick. A highly rhythmic, highly effective art of self-defense that also happens to be great fun.
Russian Kettlebell with Coach Brendan Cabral. He will teach the kids strength building techniques to magnify their athletic performance and to lay the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
The program will run from February 27, 2012 until the end of March. It will be hosted at Water Mountain Martial Society's facility. All expenses are being covered by Water Mountain.
When asked the value of the program, Master Steenrod responded, "Well, you have the cost of running 70 kids and insuring them, providing the staff. You do the math. That isn't the value though. The value is in seeing the life changing power that such training can have. I'm fortunate in that our reputation is great enough where I can afford to make such give backs to the community. I appreciate being able to work in partnership with FJA and their P.E. teacher, Marty Heilmann."
