Playa Del Carmen – What happens when dog lovers who retire to Mexico from Canada and the USA meet up with tourists who frequent the area and also Mexican citizens with a love of dogs?  They unite with a common goal of solving the street dog problem that has plagued the area for years and create a charity to do just that.

Sue Silva, of Easton Massachusetts, who resides part time in Playa Del Carmen, is one of the founders of Playa Animal Rescue.  “This is an overwhelming mission with hundreds of starving dogs roaming the streets and so little being done in the past to control the street dog population.  We need spay and neuter programs, education for the local people, rescue missions, medical attention, food and shelter for the rescued, and adoptions into loving homes,” said Silva.

Gary Forsythe and Katrina Beard Ramirez, both residents of Playa Del Carmen, and both founders, have played a vital role in caring for the animals until the new shelter is ready.  In October of 2011, an operating shelter dissolved and Playa Animal Rescue was created assuming the care of over 80 dogs.  “The dogs were sheltered in two places, both inadequate for their needs” said Forsythe, who is President of the new charity.  “We had to have a facility that was properly set up and in an area that was approved by zoning for a shelter”.  With many volunteers and donations from Mexico, Canada, and the USA, the Playa Animal Rescue facility will open in March and the dogs in their care will be moved to the new facility.

Playa Animal Rescue is a no-kill animal shelter located in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Playa Animal Rescue is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and abandoned dogs, and to finding permanent, loving homes for each of them. Although the primary focus is on dogs, Playa Animal Rescue works with other local and international animal rescue organizations to get help for cats and kittens in need. Playa Animal Rescue is also dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership with community outreach and education, as well as promoting spaying and neutering of pets.

The land for the new shelter has been provided through a family donation.  Construction funds have been advanced to complete the project and donations to cover all components are being accepted.  Please visit the website at http://www.playaanimalrescue.org to see the shelter plans and the Playa Animal Rescue dogs that are available for sponsorship and adoption.  Playa Animal rescue makes cross boarder adoptions to the United States and Canada very easy.
