Ms. Raskin began the interview by asking Ms. McDonough about her disbelief in competition. Ms. McDonough responded, “I think that the minute we start thinking about other people, it takes us off of the path we need to be on. When we’re on our path, we’re excited about what we’re doing; when we’re focused on what we’re doing, we can’t help but succeed.” Ms. McDonough says the first step towards success is being “an expert in everything [her] clients are excited about.” She believes that doing PR for something clients don’t have excitement for does not work, and she tells clients “Let’s talk about what you are excited about, get that out there, and let’s see the money rolling there.”
Ms. McDonough also discussed her experience as a small business owner in Rhode Island during poor economic times. Her years of experience in sales have taught her that the first thing you sell is yourself. Ms. McDonough said, “Like Hans Solo said, ‘Never tell me the odds.’ Just get it done… sometimes there isn’t a need, the market is saturated, but if you’re really good, you’re going to rise above that.”
Ms. McDonough continued to give advice on networking, knowing your audience, and showing gratitude through thank you letters. The entire interview can be accessed through Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/
