FDM IT careers – Our business model explained
FDM employs IT trainees and trains them to become professional IT Consultants whom we send to work on technical placements of varying lengths in our clients’ businesses. To ensure that we provide our clients with the highest possible service, FDM only accepts excellent candidates who we then train for ten to sixteen weeks in the specific technology or service area that the consultant is interested in.
At FDM we pride ourselves on providing an excellent service to our clients by meeting their needs for IT resources in a highly professional and cost-effective manner. This is essential to FDM’s success; hence we have a stringent recruitment process. Consultants are employed to work for FDM for a minimum of two years, where they receive quality training and invaluable industry experience.
After the minimum two-year contractual period, consultants become senior FDM IT Consultants and continue to work for FDM on our client sites or, alternatively, are free to leave the company to seek employment elsewhere.
Who do we consider for an FDM career?
We are always on the lookout for talented individuals to begin an FDM career in IT. If you have a passion for IT and a relevant degree then you could be on your way to an FDM career. As well as IT degrees, we also welcome numerical science, engineering, mathematics and finance degrees.
Other criteria you must meet include:
• Eligible to work in the UK and EU, or in the USA, for at least 2.5 years
• Able to support yourself financially during the training period
• Be geographically flexible within the country in which you are based
• Have some knowledge/experience in IT
• Have a basic understanding of the IT industry
• Demonstrate a passion for IT
FDM assessment days – How to start your FDM career
When looking for candidates to embark on an FDM career in IT, we hold rigorous assessment days at our local offices. The assessment day will commence with a member of the FDM recruitment team delivering a presentation about the company and our graduate programme. This will help to clarify if the FDM Academy Graduate Programme is right for you and give you a forum to ask questions to our team.
Interviews and team exercises
We will ask you to complete a short logic and written test and then participate in a team exercise where you will be assessed on your communication, team working and organisational abilities.
Following this, there will be a one-to-one interview, which will give you the chance to explain why you believe you are suited to a career in IT and demonstrate your strengths. We will be looking for candidates who have strong communication, team-working and interpersonal skills as well as a dedicated work ethic. Most importantly, successful candidates will be ambitious, determined and able to adapt to any working environment.
Individual assessment
In the afternoon we will be assessing your technical skills and business knowledge. This part of the process is dependent on which training stream you are applying for and which country you will be training in. For example, some applicants will participate in coding exercises and may also be asked to bring in a sample of code that they’ve written, which one of our trainers will review. Others may be asked to deliver a presentation or bring examples of projects completed at university or college. You will be informed when you book your session which option is required for your assessment, so will have sufficient time to prepare.
The FDM career assessments take place in the FDM office closest to you, which will enable you to view the technical training centre, and the facilities that are available to successful candidates.

Five steps to an FDM career in IT
Step 1 – Upload your CV and apply online via http://academyapplications.fdmacademy.com/
Step 2 – Our recruitment team will screen the applications and will contact suitable candidates for an initial telephone interview.
Step 3 – Candidates who pass the telephone interview will be invited to attend an assessment session at their nearest FDM office. We hold regular assessment sessions in London, Brighton, Manchester, New York and Frankfurt. The outcome of this session will determine if you embark on the FDM Graduate Programme to become an IT Consultant.
Step 4 – To ensure that you are fully equipped to represent FDM whilst working on placement at our client’s premises, you will embark on an intensive period of training specific to the stream you are interested in pursuing. During this period (of approximately twelve weeks) you will need to fund yourself.
Our award winning academies offer training in: Java or .Net Development, Application Support, Project Analysis, Infrastructure Support and Test Analysis. The full-time training takes place in our UK or US offices for approximately twelve weeks. Our dedicated trainers will support you throughout the training and you will be given the opportunity to gain valuable certifications.
Step 5 – As a fully-fledged FDM IT Consultant, you will begin your FDM career with a placement working for one of our prestigious clients and will receive a competitive salary. During this time you will be gaining invaluable career experience and representing FDM on client sites.
