Hollywood Glamour Never Goes Out of Fashion!

Feb. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Hollywood is situated in Los Angeles, California and of course is home to the movie industry and many famous movie studios. The name Hollywood was first given to the area by H J Whitley, known as the ‘Father of Hollywood’, who also opened the first major hotel in 1902, The Hollywood Hotel.

The first film made in Hollywood was a 17-minute short film called ‘In Old California’ and was released on 10 March 1910.  Over the next 10 years major film studios opened in the area and by 1920 the Hollywood boom had truly began.    By the 1940’s Hollywood had seen some great names such as Rudolph Valentino, Marlene Dietrich Tyrone Power, Clark Gable and Judy Garland to name but a few.

The Hollywood sign is now a famous landmark and was constructed in 1923 as a advertisment for new housing.  Although never intended to be permanent, this was left in place and since has become the internationally recognised sign we know today.  It was restored in the1970’s with each letter being 45 ft tall and is now protected by the Hollywood Sign Trust.  

In the 1950’s Hollywood saw continued growth and in 1958 the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame was started to honour stars within the entertainment industry.  This began with 2,500 blank stars, with a total of 1,558 stars being awarded during its first sixteen months.  Since then about two stars have been added per month.  The Walk of Fame attracts around 10 million visitors a year and now has 2,458 stars over the 1.3 miles.
