Feb. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- Aware Technology today announced that the US Patent and Trademark Office expanded the Company’s intellectual property rights with the grant of a new patent.  The patent claims address the ability to learn from operating data and to apply it as knowledge in real time.  The patent strengthens Aware Technology’s product portfolio and further positions the Company as a pioneer in the fields of dynamic data analysis and business-critical condition monitoring.

US Patent 8,036,999 was officially issued on October  11, 2011.  It confers intellectual property rights to Aware Technology in the area of complex data clustering and dynamic modeling.  In particular, the claims secure rights to the operation of technologies such as the Company’s PDM solution in an “open book” or learning mode.   This method of operation enables technologies to both modify existing models and formulate new models while actively monitoring the condition of business-critical systems.  This ability is the foundation of dynamic learning and represents the essence of experience.

“This patent represents a significant breakthrough,” remarked Peter Millett, PhD, Aware Technology’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer.  “It recognizes a major innovation in the area of data clustering and the ability to adapt to changes in the condition of dynamic systems.  This provides valuable protection of our rights in an area that has generated significant market interest.”

Condition monitoring and anomaly detection technologies have historically applied complex algorithms to establish data clusters.  Such clusters are representative of known states of operation – both good and bad.  These technologies compare new data against the known states, and they provide alerts when a mismatch or an otherwise new condition is identified.  Modifying the database of known conditions for the newly identified data cluster(s) requires human intervention.  These technologies are unable to adapt automatically to the new information.

Process Data Monitor (PDM) is an innovative condition monitoring and anomaly detection solution released by Aware Technology in September 2011.  Equipped with the newly patented capability, PDM is unique in the market due to its ability to operate in “open book” mode and to automatically adapt to changing operational conditions.  PDM is the only solution in the category of condition monitoring and anomaly detection technologies with this ability to adapt to changing conditions.

Peter Millett noted further, “We continue to invest in our technology and to make significant strides in its capabilities.  With this most recent patent and other innovations to PDM, we are creating a new category of technology that goes well beyond static models and that addresses the need for experience.”

PDM leverages a powerful data clustering and pattern recognition algorithm first introduced by NASA and more recently enhanced by Aware Technology.  The original NASA algorithm has been used extensively in the monitoring of complex systems ranging from the launch of the Space Shuttle to the control and maintenance of the International Space Station.  PDM actively monitors the data streams from numerous, interacting sources, and it applies a clustering algorithm to recognize patterns – patterns that represent the fingerprints of unusual and/or troubling trends.

PDM is licensed either as an enterprise application or as a cloud-based application.  ChemStaff was recently recognized for its application of PDM in the remote monitoring of water chemistry within over 25% of the nuclear power facilities located in the United States.  Earlier in 2011 Aware Technology entered into a reseller relationship with Control Station where PDM has been bundled with their PlantESP application.  Control Station targets the needs of the process automation market.

Aware Technology delivers “Automation Confidence through System Awareness,” by offering automated learning technology based on a combination of NASA Pattern Recognition and Data Clustering algorithms and automation industry specific Intellectual Property. Founded in 2011, Aware Technology delivers PDM (Process Data Monitor), with an assortment of supporting products and technology, delivered as an Enterprise Appliance, or as a SaaS (Software as a Service) Private Cloud hosted application. PDM learns from the day to day operation of your systems and automatically generates an experience database. It then generates confidence metrics for usual behavior and delivers notification on unusual behavior.
