Last year the human resources team partnered with the food and beverage department to establish The Biggest NCC Winner Competition, based on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” television show which awards participants who have achieved their weight loss goals. The Biggest NCC Winner Competition awarded $500 to the participant who lost the highest percentage of their previous body weight in a three-month period.
In an effort to aid participants of the program, changes were made to the staff dining menu. The new additions included mixed greens, fresh fruit and whole wheat pasta. Implementing healthy staff dining options was an easy task for Executive Chef Craig Mason who had already implemented healthy menu items using fresh, locally grown ingredients for NCC customers. Chef Mason, also a participant in the competition, consulted health magazines for ideas on how to add variety to the menu and make staff favorites more nutritious. A section of the staff dining room was also transformed into an information center, where participants were able to post healthy recipes and share exercise tips.
In addition to the changes in the staff dining room, participants were also encouraged to walk the grounds of the property during breaks and to use the fitness centers at NCC. A number of fitness focused activities including yoga and kickboxing classes were scheduled during evening hours.
“The salsa dancing classes were very popular,” said NCC human resources representative, Lindsay Boyd who organized the competition. “It was wonderful to see so many of the participants working together to achieve their individual weight loss goals.”
