All are invited to vote in the Sanibel Oscar contest; ballots are available at BIG ARTS Center, Bailey’s General Store, George & Wendy’s Corner Grill, Island Cinema, and Watson McRae Gallery. The celebration will mark the conclusion of the two-month long “Oscar Contender” series screened Wednesdays at Island Cinema.
Starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, this John Huston film is set in Africa during World War I. A gin-swilling riverboat captain and strait-laced missionary forge an unlikely romance despite fierce rows and moral antagonism. Bogart won the 1952 Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and "The African Queen" was nominated for three other Academy Awards.
Enhanced by surround sound the digitally-restored "African Queen" will be shown in the comfort of Schein Performance Hall, with a high-definition projection system and large screen to provide a superb cinematic presentation. Listening devices are available. The $15 ticket includes film, ceremony and champagne reception.
Everyone is invited to dress up for the red carpet and hear emcee Albert Hann announce results from islanders voting. Many of the glitterati will be wearing bling from Congress Jewelers, with hair and makeup styled by Sanibel Day Spa. Some celebs will show off hair styled by Josie Crown. The “Fashion Police” will provide live running commentary on red-carpet fashion.
