Feb. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- More than ever before, homeowners are taking advantage of rainwater for household use. Some are using it for drinking and bathing, while others prefer to use it for watering the lawn and shrubbery. Either way, it offers the possibility of a substantial savings on water consumption, which is good for the pocketbook and for the environment. Tanks for rainwater are now being made in a wider variety of shapes, sizes and colors than ever before, and there is a model suitable for any home.

For the individual homeowner, water is one of the major expenses. In town there’s the utility bill, and in country settings where a pump is used, there’s the power used for the pumping. The idea of using rainwater to supplement the household water supply isn’t new, but more people are considering doing it now because of the economic downturn. This may be a blessing in disguise, since water shortages will probably get more common as cities grow, and anything that gets people in the habit of using rainwater will have long-term benefits for everybody.

One of the reasons this idea hasn’t caught on sooner is that in the past, there wasn’t much variety in the design of water tanks, and the ones that were available weren’t suitable for some locations. These old tanks tended to be big, bulky affairs that required a lot of room. When placed on a roof, they often required the installation of additional structural support to prevent them crashing through into the floor below. Besides all that, they were often quite ugly and did nothing for the look of the house.

The new designs are an attempt to address these issues. For instance, some new tanks have a tall, slim shape that allows them to be placed close to the side of a building, making them less obvious and taking up less horizontal space. Others have a low, flat shape that will work better in some settings. The old corrugated plastic is still available, but for those who prefer s less utilitarian look there are also smooth-sided models.

There is also more variety in size, ranging from smaller models that can be safely installed in a roof to larger ones of much greater capacity. For those who prefer not to see the tank at all, there are underground models, while the above-ground kind come in an assortment of colors for a closer match to their surroundings.

Homeowners who purchase water tanks will be delighted with the results, since one square meter of collecting area will yield a liter of water for every millimetre of rain that falls on it.
