AZ Owned, Service-Disabled Veteran Technology Firm Invited to Jobs-Focused DC Conference on Internet and Wireless Deployment Impact

CHANDLER, AZ – FEBRUARY 14, 2012 – Alan Castillo, President of Castillo Technologies, LLC, traveled to Washington DC to attend a NDN and National Policy Institute invitation-only, daylong meeting at the White House for a discussion centered around the substantial economic benefits from advances in wireless broadband infrastructure, the adoption of devices that take advantage of that infrastructure, and how national policy should actively promote the rapid deployment and broad adoption of 4G wireless broadband as a catalyst for employment and innovation.

A recent white paper authored by leading economists, Rob Shapiro and Kevin Hassett, "The Employment Effects of Advances in Internet and Wireless Technology: Evaluating the Transitions from 2G to 3G and from 3G to 4G" estimated that under the current transition, every 10 percent increase in the adoption of 3G and 4G wireless technologies could add more than 231,000 new jobs to the U.S. economy in less than a year.

Their research found that a 10 percentage point gain in penetration of a new generation of wireless technology in a given quarter leads to a 0.07 percentage-point gain in employment in the following quarter and results in continuing gains in subsequent quarters. Additionally, widespread adoption of broadband will allow local communities to transition effectively and successfully to a knowledge economy thus increasing their competitive edge on the global economic stage; 4G technologies could help the American economy restore gains in incomes and business investment.

Mr. Castillo and other attendees discussed the advantages of 4G technologies, the need for rapid deployment and the innovation that will accompany widespread availability. In addition to benefits to the business community, the group addressed how better broadband access will generate significant and widespread societal gains. Improvement in health care services relating to medical records access, learning and education advances, general information access, and more efficient management of our nation’s electricity networks, to name a few.
