Houston, TX –-February, 2012—“Leah’s Uncompromised Abstinence” is a story about two best friends, Leah and Jada, who desire to be popular. Although these friends want to be popular, they make a blood promise to embrace abstinence until they are married. Leah is steadfast and honors her promise, but Jada fails to practice abstinence and becomes pregnant. She is an upright Christian girl and cannot possibly let anyone – not even her mother, find out about her pregnancy. Jada’s boyfriend and his mother force her to have an illegal underground abortion. Hurricane Rita, now a powerful category four hurricane, rolls closer toward the Gulf Coast. Jada devises a scheme and pretends that she is worried about her Aunt Nan, who lives alone in Oak Island, Texas. She concocts a lie and tells her mother that Leah will drive her to Oak Island to Aunt Nan’s house. Jada intends to drive Aunt Nan to Dallas where they will join the rest of the family. Aunt Nan’s house is the perfect place to ride out the storm and heal before returning home. It appears that Jada has done her homework. The day before the hurricane devastates the Gulf Coast, Jada has the abortion. After the abortion, things go terribly wrong, and her caretakers decide to drop her off at Aunt Nan’s house. On the way to Aunt Nan’s house, Jada has complications and stops breathing. Her caretakers dispose of her body under the cover of darkness along the shore of Old and Lost River. Eight weeks later, Jada’s body is found in the river’s tall grass marshes. Leah blames herself for Jada’s death because she promised Jada that she would not tell a soul. The authorities believe that Hurricane Rita claimed Jada’s life, but Leah knows better. She is overwhelmed with grief and consumed in guilt, so she finally tells her Aunt Ree about the abortion. Aunt Ree is outraged, and they set out to find Jada’s killers. Leah has a series of reflections and nightmarish dreams about what could have possibly happened to Jada. Eventually, with Aunt Ree’s assistance, Jada’s killers are exposed. Leah finds closure, and the reflections and nightmarish dreams subside. Leah did the right thing, and years later, her uncompromised abstinence pays off when she meets her knight in shining armor.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

M. D. Holiday grew up in the poor farming community of Alto, Louisiana. She loves telling stories because words have always fascinated her and telling stories is in her blood. Although, her father never wrote a book, he told humorous stories of his childhood to anyone who would listen. Two of her nephews also enjoy writing. At the age of five, she remembers not having the luxury of paper and pencils. In those days, her parents’ top priority was putting food on the table. There was little money available to spend on paper and pencils, except for the school age children in the family. She refused to let the “lack of” these essential writing tools interfere with jotting down words, so she used discarded paper grocery bags and stubby pencils. When she could not find paper grocery bags, she brushed back the sandy soil at the edge of the porch, broke off a piece of her mother’s peach tree switch, and continued writing words in the sand. She and her ten siblings often missed school to help her parents work and put food on the table. Whenever she had the opportunity to return to the classroom, she worked hard to catch up on her writing assignments.

Ms. Holiday has always worked diligently and often cast her dream of writing aside for a season. She still did not give up on her dream of writing, and her second dream of obtaining a degree. She has a few classes remaining before she receives a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management. She resides in Friendswood, Texas, and enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and volunteering in the community.
