Feb. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- Calgary, Alberta (February 8, 2012) – What were you doing on February 14th last year? If you can't remember chances are you fell short, and chances are your sweetheart remembers this too. A recent study shows that a staggering 64% of men did not make plans ahead of time for Valentine’s Day last year, AKA they fell short.

Don’t let this be you. We know you’re busy, and we also understand that trying to figure out plans can be tricky. Luckily for you though we’ve come up with a few easy ideas that you can use to “wow” the lady in your life. Truth be told, most women don’t need expensive gifts to be happy on Valentine’s Day. All they want is to feel loved and appreciated, and okay, maybe a little pampered.

“For me, Valentine’s Day isn’t about getting a present,” said Holly McGregor, Student, Oil Sands Royalities at Canadian Natural Resources Limited, “I just like to feel special. Of course, flowers are always nice.” She’s right; according to 4-traders.com, eight out of 10 women prefer cards and flowers to expensive presents on Valentine’s Day. "There are a lot of ways to make your special someone feel important on Valentine's Day like surprising them with a nice bottle of champagne or their favourite bottle of wine," suggests Sarah Mehus, Assistant Manager of J.Webb Wine Merchants.

The way we see it, there are three things that you can do to make sure you don’t drop the ball this Valentine’s Day.

Flowers. Women love something pretty. A bouquet of roses is a great way to show her that you were thinking of her. Red stimulates a faster heartbeat, and is also the color of love so this is a great way to brighten her day. If you’re unsure of her favourite flower, you can’t go wrong with roses. Show up on her doorstep with these in hand (or leave them on her bedside table) and you’ll be off to a great start. In Bloom Florists offers beautiful arrangements of red or mixed roses in a clear vase, starting at $35.00.

Sweets. Imagine: She wakes up in the morning to the smell of cinnamon buns baking in the oven. Combined with the aroma of organic coffee beans brewing, and you know she’s going to have a great day. Keeping in mind that most men probably haven’t the slightest idea of how to bake a cinnamon bun, Vie Cafe and Pascal's Patisserie have the perfect solution; they bake the goods for you, then freeze them. All you have to do is take them home, unwrap, and pop them in the oven – it’s that easy. As for coffee, you can purchase her favourite blend extra hot, and have it waiting for her when she wakes up.

Dinner. When it comes to dinner, you have two choices. You can take your Valentine out, or you can bring dinner home to her. Bringing dinner home to her is a great option because you can surprise her by having dinner on the table when she walks through the door, or you can spend the evening in the kitchen making your favourite meal together. Buy all of the ingredients ahead of time to save you from having to make an emergency trip in the middle of your preparations. Making dinner at home also lets you pair your meal with her favourite wine. A bottle of the 2010 Blue Mountain Gamay from Okanagan Falls ($24.95 from J.Webb Wine Merchants on 17th Ave) has beautiful floral notes; the perfect complement to your Valentine’s Day dinner. If taking her out for a night on the town is more your style, try a French style bistro. Paris is known as the city of love, and restaurants such as Cassis Bistro offer authentic dishes inspired by France, created with local produce.

Now that you've been taken into the mind of a woman you know what we're thinking and you know how to avoid falling short on Valentines 2012. Above all, it's just another day to showcase your love, dedication and desire to please the one you're with. So pull up your socks and get planning Romeo!
