Feb. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- Recently the Upper Elementary (4th – 6th grade) NewGate students enjoyed a special visit with New York Times Bestseller Ann Hood the author of The Red Thread and The Knitting Circle. The students listened as Ms. Hood described her reasons for her first children's series; enchanted as she explained that she had always wanted to travel back in time to meet famous people and that this childhood desire finally led to the series, The Treasure Chest that debuted this month.

Ms. Hood read parts of the first book, Angel of the Battlefield where her main characters Felix and Maisie Robbins go back in time and meet a young Clara Barton: Engaging the students in the how’s and why’s behind their character development. The young writers were thrilled to hear that even bestselling authors sometimes have trouble expressing their ideas and were intrigued that editing is important to people other than their teachers.  Ms. Hood then gave the students a sneak peak at the characters that are to be featured in all eight books, planned for her new series giving them an opportunity to suggest more.  As an added bonus, Ms. Hood revealed a tidbit about an anagram that will be presented in book five, challenged the students began to work on solving it and shared many of their ideas during the visit.

The chance to write and express oneself in a lasting way as well as interact with International and Local authors is a gift we give to our students here at NewGate.  Teacher Cheryl Allen noted, “Taking the time to work with each student to write, edit, revise, and share a variety of writing assignments, develops writing skills. But realizing that even a famous author goes through the same steps and shares some of the same struggles develops confidence and strengthens a love of reading and writing.”

Georgia Court, Owner of Bookstore1Sarasota of Sarasota, our sponsor, brought Ms. Ann Hood to our doorstep and generously donated copies of her two published books in The Treasure Chest series; Angel of the Battlefield and Little Lion to both of our elementary and secondary classrooms.  Ms. Hood kindly autographed the donated books, as well as the copies and bookmarks the students had purchased.
