Feb. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- Char Dham Yatra  is one of the most famed spiritual journeys of Hinduism. Hindu people believes that by the blessings of Lord, this holy journey would aid them to attain salvation i.e moksha. Even it is said that after completion of Char dham Yatra, all our past sins are washed away. The char dham yatra has been practiced since ancient times and even today around three lakh visitors take this trip during the annual pilgrim season. Char means four and Dham means the abode of god. These four shrines are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Shri Kedarnath, and Shri Badrinath. Although people do visit them one at a time some times, but most oft, people like to go for a char dham yatra. That means a journey where they visit all of them one after another in one journey.
The Char Dham Yatra must be visited from left to right -beginning with Yamunotri, going on to Gangotri, Kedarnath and culminating the journey at Badrinath. This route follows the Hindu tradition of parikrama or clockwise circumambulation. Explore these places and have a deep communication with the Lord Almighty up in the misty heights of the majestic Garhwal Himalayas in the magnificent state of Uttarakhand.
The base of starting the Char Dham Yatra is the holy city Haridwar. From Haridwar one must head to Yamunotri through Rishikesh. One must start in the early morning from Haridwar as the journey to Yamunotri takes the entire day. Yamunotri, the starting place of the Yamuna River and the place of the goddess Yamuna, is also considered to be one of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. The actual temple is only accessible by a thirteen kilometer walk from the town of Hanuman Chatti and a six kilometer walk from Janki Chatti; horses or palanquins are available for rent. The hike from Hanuman Chatti to Yamunotri is very picturesque with beautiful views of a number of waterfalls. The temple is an idol of Goddess Yamuna carved in black stone that is mainly worshipped. A hot water pool at Yamunotri is used for the preparation of Prasad, normally rice and potatoes, cooked by dipping them in the hot water, tied in cloth bags. The shrine can also be visited via Mussoorie and Barkot.
The next dham is Gangotri. The mythological legends state that the temple prayed here is just next to the spot where holy River Ganga first descended on Mother Earth. The temple where you pray now was made in the 18th century. When you travel here, very few people have the courage to travel up to the Gaumukh glacier from where the geography believes that the River Ganga gets its never ending flow of water. The most impressive feature of Gangotri temple is the Aarti that is conducted on the banks of river Ganga. There are many such guest houses and hotels where the people can even to stay.
After visiting Gangotri Dham the next is Kedarnath. It is a shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, the destroyer. It is believed that it is the abode of Lord Shiva and his family. With the dazzling background of gigantic white dome wrapped with snow, this temple is a captivating beauty. The glory of the temple can be attributed to the fact that it is one of the twelve jyotirlingas (Lord Shiva shrines), present in the country. The temple remains open only for a period of six months, due to heavy snowfall in the winter months.
Badrinath Dham is so popular among Chardham Yatra. Every year lots of pilgrims come and take holy darshan of Badrinath Dham. It is located on the banks of the River Alaknanda, this temple is devoted to Hindu deity Lord Vishnu, the creator. This is the most pious destinations among all the other dham. Badrinath is the abode of Lord Vishnu.  There are a number of hot water pools here namely Tapt Kund, Narad Kund etc. These pools are filled with hot steaming water in the winter months also and are considered to posses medicinal properties.
