Taking a Chance on Charity Pays Off: Harleys for Heroes awards Harley-Davidsons to 2011 Winner

Feb. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- When Valerie Snider of Mishawaka, Indiana, heard about the Harleys for Heroes Sweepstakes, she was skeptical. Months later, when she heard she had WON, she was in downright denial.

"No WAY," she yelled over the phone after being told the good news.

Running from August to December 2011, the first Harleys for Heroes Sweepstakes was conducted to raise funds and awareness for the Healing Heroes Network, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is providing financial assistance for medical treatments to injured veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan since September 1, 2001. With as little as $10 a donation, participants could enter for the chance to win the Grand Prize of two Harley-Davidson® motorcycles (a 2011 Street Glide and a 2011 Fat Boy Lo) and a year's worth of gas to enjoy them.

Valerie donated for ten tickets, but never expected to do anything more than give to a good cause. "I was thinking this was either going to be a scam or actually was going to go to something good. Luckily, it went to something good, and it was for something even greater than me winning the bikes."

A giveaway party was held December 11, 2011, at the Clearwater, Florida, Quaker Steak n' Lube. Onlookers hushed for the Clearwater High School Color Guard, then cheered the winner through her emotional words.

"This has been a great, great experience for me," Valerie said. "Never did I ever imagine that something like this in my lifetime would ever happen just because I wanted to help somebody."

Valerie accepted the motorcycles onstage, amidst tears and smiles.

"We are all so happy for Valerie and grateful to all our supporters who contributed to this campaign," said Stacey Spiegel, Executive Director for Healing Heroes Network. "This is just one sign of appreciation for the brave men and women of our armed forces who risk their lives for us."

The Harleys for Heroes Sweepstakes started August 1, 2011, and ended December 1, 2011. The upcoming 2012 Harleys for Heroes Sweepstakes will be announced later this year. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the subsequent war on terror, thousands of members of our armed forces have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Often these men and women are unable to receive the medical treatments that would facilitate their return to a productive civilian life. While the Department of Veteran Affairs provides treatment to these troops, the scope of covered services is limited, sometimes unavailable, and often delayed.

Healing Heroes Network was founded in 2008 by Dr. Allan Spiegel and his wife Stacey in order to fill these gaps.
