Dr. Glenn Mills Named Director of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at LSU Health Shreveport

After a national search and approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors, Dr. Glenn Mills has been named Director of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at LSU Health Shreveport.
 
Feb. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Glenn Mills, MD FACP, has been named Director of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. A member of the LSU Health Shreveport staff since 1986, Dr. Mills has served as interim director of the cancer center since the 2011 retirement of the founding director, Jonathan Glass, MD. His promotion was approved February 3 by the LSU Board of Supervisors.

The Feist-Weiller Cancer Center began as a Center for Excellence in Cancer Treatment, Research, Education and Prevention in 1993. It was named Feist-Weiller Cancer Center in 1997, and a new 60,000-square foot outpatient cancer center opened in 2004. It is home to one of only six St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Affiliate Programs outside Memphis.

Dr. Mills is Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Chief of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Director of Clinical Research and Program Director of the Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship program at LSU Health Shreveport, which has grown to be one of the largest programs in the Southeast US.

He has led efforts at Feist-Weiller for prevention and education activities as well as inclusion of minorities in cancer research and clinical trials and was awarded the Minority Based Community Cancer Outreach Program grant that has brought in more than $2.2 million for research from the National Cancer Institute since 2007. He was also principal investigator for a multi-year National Cancer Institute National Colonoscopy study that ended in 2011. In total, Dr. Mills has been the principal investigator for over 300 clinical trials which have bought millions of research dollars into LSU Health Shreveport.

Dr. Mills earned his medical degree at the University of Mississippi Medical School and completed his residency while a member of the U.S Army Medical Corps at Tripler Army Medical Center. He went on to fellowship training at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and subsequently became Director of the Hematology Research Laboratory and later Chief of Hematology and Oncology there. During that time, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. The first physician recruit for Dr. Glass, he joined LSU Health Shreveport as Assistant Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program and Assistant Professor in the Hematology/Oncology Section. He became Associate Director of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center in 1995.

A member of the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Louisiana, he has served on the executive committee and Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and is on the Board of Governors for the Southwest Oncology Group.

Dr. Mills and his wife, Denise, have three children and live in Shreveport.
