Pop music vs Rock music. Which genre has more fans?
Everyone can vote and influence the championship.

There are many differences that separate rock and pop music. It's true. But do they have something in common?

A cocktail party for everyone
Music is like a good party where You invite all Your friends. They are different and You like them since they are so different. And they drink differently. The hardcore college friends pack prefers good old whisky and Your girlfriend may prefer French wine or Pina Collada. Probably no one would argue about what is better - everyone drinks what tastes better for him/her and has fun. And at a good party You can have a great time with people regardless of what they drink - be it Baccardy or an orange juice.

Things get more complicated when it comes to music. The same room can hardly keep those who like to get some trance and techno and those who prefer Shakira, U2 or Fantastish Global Systems. Someone will always say that the other`s music tastes are not kosher. C`mon people - pop and rock genres are different but they also have so much in common allowing us to have fun together.

Elvis Presley style
There are some questions that mostly stop the discussions on what is better - pop or rock music. First of them - let`s think if Elvis Presley is pop or rock singer. Right, he is often referred as a king of rock-and-roll, but we know that his songs were really popular and many among modern pop stars take him as a model for their own creative development.

Beatles riddle
Here`s an another hard-to-answer questions - what is the actual style of the music Beatles were playing? Those who listen to them for quite a time will say that it depends on what part of their songs are we talking about, since in different periods the bands sound was different.

This group managed to combine so many styles, that it is hard to tell exactly what style that was. Except for it was really popular and blended rock-and-roll with many other great styles.

Popularity and creativity
In fact love-and-hate relations between popularity and creativity is what often divides popular and rock music. With a whole bunch of new rock stars becoming popular during the last decade or two they are often moving into a category of pop. Take a look at U2, Nickleback, R.E.M., POD, Red Hot Chilly Peppers - all of them have become way more popular these days.

Moreover the creative power and appeal of rock bands often inspires those musicians that we call pop. Just if you try to listen more attentively to some tunes by Lady Gaga, Madonna or Britney Spears, Katy Perry you can hear these parts derived from rock.

On the other side the opposite is also true. Some popular songs sound just great in rock covers. Never heard of that? Than you can listen to Michael Jackson`s Smooth criminal covered by Alient Ant Farm or Since You`ve been gone covered by a rock band A Day To Remember. Yeah, and also try Sweet Dreams by Marilyn Manson which was originally a popular song of Eurythmics.

All this proves old truth - creativity requires solitude and concentration. That is probably why rock bands are more specialized in their creativity. And just at the time they had enough of creative freedom to produce a real masterpiece like Linkin Park`s "New Divide" they arrive at popular scene, creating a new music trend.

Various styles - different activities
Rock and pop music are quite different and this is also true. Rock music is mostly about expressing emotions using instruments while popular music has more emphasis on vocal and depicting feelings and relationships. At the same time rock is more often dedicated to important social problems. And it requires more of attention. It means, that listening rock while doing something is harder than having something like Rhianna or Enrique Iglesias on the background while performing office routines.

And that is great about these two major styles - You can use them for different things. Lighter and more dance-related pop-tunes are just great for jogging , accompanying You at work or some home routines. And 30 Seconds to Mars, Linkin Park or Fantastish Global Systems might be better when You need to concentrate on something - these guys are good when You need to mobilize all Your will and fortitude.

The best from both worlds
With high creativity of both Pop and Rock universes there is no wonder that some are trying to combine the advantages of the two. Britpop and pop-rock styles were just the beginning of the mutual enrichment between good ol` rock and always romantic pop. Among those who successfully brought rock to larger pop audience during the last decade are Nickleback, Muse, P.O.D., U2 and many other interesting creative young groups.

Summary
As a summary of what was said above a conclusion can be made that different music styles are like different feelings and experiences. No one can say what is better: an urge to overcome the obstacle and reach the desired goal or an aspiration to relax and relieve the brain from all thoughts? Nobody can even imagine a contemplation aimed to decide what is better: joy or freedom. All these feelings just exist and all of them are perfect. And music with its variety of styles just reflects the diversity of feelings living in every human being.
