Chemist sheds light on novel technology for energy research, industry

Michigan University’s Goodson III is CSULA’s 2012 Ferguson Lecturer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 09, 2012 -
“Translating Energy Research Ideas in to Industry”—Cal State L.A.’s Lloyd N. Ferguson Distinguished Lecture Series for 2012—will be presented on Friday, Feb. 17, 1 p.m., at Cal State L.A.’s Golden Eagle Ballroom.

Theodore Goodson III, the Richard Barry Bernstein Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan, will deliver the lecture.

Goodson’s research centers on the investigation of nonlinear optical and energy transfer in organic multi-chromophore systems for particular optical and electronic applications. He has investigated new quantum optical effects in organic systems, which have applications in discrete communication systems and sensing.

Goodson’s lab was also the first to investigate the fundamental excitations in small metal topologies, which are now candidates for tissue and other biological imaging.  In 2009, he founded Wolverine Energy Solutions and Technologies Inc., a start-up company with contracts to produce high-energy density capacitors for military, automotive, and medical devices.

His awards include the National Science Foundation American Innovation Fellowship, Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, Lloyd Ferguson Young Scientist Award, American Chemical Society Minority Mentorship Award, and a National Academy of Sciences Ford Postdoctoral Fellowship. In addition, Goodson has published more than 110 scientific publications and presented more than 140 invited talks. He received his B.A. from Wabash College and earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

For more about Goodson, go to https://www.chem.lsa.umich.edu/chem/faculty/facultyDetail... or http://www.umich.edu/~goodgrp/.

Goodson will also present a science talk, entitled “Optical and Electronic Properties of Organic Energy Storage Materials,” on Thursday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 5 p.m., in Salazar Hall C162, on the CSULA campus. This event is free to the public.

Established in 1995 in honor of a Cal State L.A. emeritus professor of chemistry, The Lloyd N. Ferguson Distinguished Lecture brings science experts to the Cal State L.A. campus. Ferguson passed away in November at 93.

The lecture is sponsored by the College of Natural and Social Sciences and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Cal State L.A.

Unless otherwise directed, guests should park in areas with permit dispensers (Parking Structure C, Lot 5 and Lot 7).  Reservations are required. For details on the Lloyd N. Ferguson Distinguished Lecture, call (323) 343-2300.
