Cardinal Gibbons High School Students, Faculty and Alumni Gather to Throw 95th Birthday Party

Cardinal Gibbons High School Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni Gather to Throw 95th Birthday Party for Co-Founding Principal Sister Marie Schramko on Feb. 10 Schramko Has Been with Cardinal Gibbons High School for Over 50 Years

PRLog - Feb. 7, 2012 - The entire current student body of Cardinal Gibbons High School (CGHS), plus faculty, staff and alumni will gather at the school’s courtyard on Friday, Feb. 10 to throw a birthday party unlike any other: a 95th birthday celebration for the school’s co-founding Principal and current Assistant Principal Sister Marie Schramko, O.S.F.

During the party, student leaders will present Schramko with a statue of St. Francis. Also in her honor, the celebration will include a tiered cake, and a performance by the school’s glee club and band.

A native of Johnstown, Penn., Schramko has worked in education throughout her 75 years of religious life; over 50 of those years have been spent at Gibbons. She taught religion, science and mathematics at various high schools in Ohio and Illinois before coming to CGHS, where she also taught Latin, algebra, geometry, biology and chemistry in addition to her administrative duties. In 2009, she decided to leave the classroom and focus on her administrative position, although she still helps individual students.

“Sister Marie truly embodies the motto of CGHS: ‘Educating the heart as well as the mind,’” said CGHS Principal Paul D. Ott. “She has seen our school go from a sand-strewn campus (where classes were still held) in 1961 to the fully-developed 18-acre campus it is today. We are honored that she is a part of CGHS.”

Schramko entered religious life in 1934, and made her profession of vows in 1937. She holds a bachelor’s from the College of St. Francis (now University of St. Francis) in Joliet, Ill., a master’s from DePaul University in Chicago, Ill., and a second master’s in Administration and Counseling from the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. She also attended the University of Illinois on a science grant.
