Barloworld extends port centric handling solutions as volumes grow

PRLog - Feb. 7, 2012 - MAIDENHEAD, U.K. -- Materials handling supplier, Barloworld Handling, has extended its range of solutions to ports, terminals and freight logistics operations throughout the UK, and is providing free advice to help companies reduce costs as volumes grow.

“Rising fuel costs and EU emissions regulations are affecting the use of container handling equipment” says Mike Parkin, Ports and Terminals Sales Manager for Barloworld Handling. “With container volumes predicted to grow over the next few years, ports and freight terminal operations are highly motivated to review options that lead to improved efficiency and carbon reductions.”

The department of transport says rail freight has expanded by 60% over the last decade and is expected to grow by a further 30% by 2019.

Barloworld Handling’s national team of ports and terminals specialists is offering advice and a comprehensive site survey of any operations materials handling needs. Through sophisticated materials mapping and 3D simulation software the company can test different scenarios before any investment is made.

“The analysis helps ensure the right mix of equipment is chosen according to the operators’ current and future capacity needs” Mike says. “We can also provide fuel and carbon emission projections to help customers understand the total cost of ownership.”

Barloworld has over 50 years materials handling expertise in the ports and terminals sector and new energy efficient equipment has recently been added to its ‘Port Centric’ range including heavy capacity Hyster container handling trucks, forklifts, electric warehousing equipment and specialist equipment such as terminal tractors and sideloaders.

“Many companies are looking for experienced providers that can supply, support and manage a whole fleet” says Mike. “Barloworld provides the flexibility to work alongside a customer’s own onsite mechanics or provide fully planned maintenance through its national team of ports and terminals trained engineers.”

The Hyster range of heavy capacity trucks over 16 tonnes supplied by Barloworld, including ReachStackers, has been upgraded with significant energy saving technology to ensure compliance with the Tier 4 interim, Stage IIIB emissions legislation, and to deliver fuel savings of up to 20%.    Furthermore, the new Hyster 5-8 high empty container handler also features the award winning tyre saving axle that reduces tyre wear by as much as a factor of 3.

“We are driving down the cost of operation with new technologies that help reduce costs and we can provide projected calculations to assist with planning” says Mike.

Uniquely, Barloworld provides a total port centric solution from container handling trucks to equipment operated in port located warehouse and logistics operations. In addition to pallet trucks, reach trucks, order pickers and VNA (very narrow aisle) equipment, the range also includes access equipment, cleaning equipment, tugs, trailers and specialist equipment for handling a wide range of materials. Barloworld helps businesses realise the most efficient ways of unloading containers close to the port, so that empty containers can be returned straight to the exporting berth, and to optimise port centric picking and packing operations.

The combination of Barloworld’s specialist knowledge and application based solutions enables operators to maximise availability and performance. The company works closely with customers to understand and improve operations, optimising fleet efficiency, managing utilisation and minimising costs such as tyres, brakes and batteries.  For more information, visit http://www.barloworld.co.uk/.
