"This is just more proof as to how ridiculous it is that Missouri Senators Lamping and Crowell are pushing a new law to force Lt. Governor and Governor candidates to run on the same ticket. It appears there will be upwards of 10 candidates on this year's ballot -- that's good for democracy" said Carter. "It's not good for the legislature to consciously try and dillute the citizens' votes."
Carter insists he's right about the voting public's desire to vote on the offices separately given that very recent voter preferences have shown a preference for Democratic Lt. Governor Carnahan with then Republican Governor Ashcroft along with Republican Kinder and Democrat Nixon now.
He said that it should not be the province of the Missouri legislature to regularly contravene the publics' will - similar to the mistake it made with Proposition B, the Missouri Dog Breeding Regulation Initiative. He points out that he actively and fervently supported Missouri's failed Conceal and Carry Proposition in 1999 and was genuinely conflicted when the legislature overrode the publics' statewide vote.
Carter says all elections should be non-partisan and that Missouri's Lt. Governor, Governor party dichotomy points to the fact that Missouri is an independent voting state that would prefer non-partisan elections.
