Partners with IO Data to Bring HDTV to Japanese PC Users

London, February 7 , 2012: Mirics™, developer of FlexiTV™, the world’s first commercial software-based global TV receiver, announces availability of their FlexiStream™ client software for Apple iOS devices, bringing live European DVB-T broadcast TV to personal screens, worldwide.
FlexiTV™, the world’s first and only software based TV receiver, developed by Mirics™, has been introduced to Japan by IO Data – the country’s market leader for pc users.
The new product – the IO Data GV-TV 100 USB dongle – gives pc users in Japan HD TV reception, now the country has switched from analog to digital broadcasting.
The transition has been completed in all of Japan, except three prefectures, and 95% of Japanese households can now receive free HD TV programs, which will increase appetite for content.
The USB dongle uses Mirics’ FlexiTV as the underlying reception technology, bringing software demodulation already proven in Europe and South America, to Japan.
IO Data is the market leader in Japan for PC TV accessories with 42% market share, so consumers – particularly those in the Akihabara area, who want to be ahead of the pack – will buy this tried and trusted brand above all others.
Said Simon Atkinson, Chief Executive of Mirics: “This exciting new, cost effective product will open up the live TV viewing market on the PC to a wider audience, by making quality HD viewing more affordable and a less passive experience.
It should have the effect of stimulating and expanding the market for viewing and managing TV content on the PC as a whole. Also, now the switchover to digital has taken place, Japanese households can now access multiple HD TV channels on their PCs as well as living room TVs.”
The product supports ISDB-T Full-seg (for HD TV), One-seg (mobile reception at QVGA resolution), One-seg dubbing to iPad, iPod touch, iPhone and Android mobile.
The GV-TV100 is marketed with the user interface software brand of “Tele-king” and utilizes a custom television GUI developed by IOD and their software partner.
The GV-TV100 also supports the new SIM-sized form factor BCAS smart card, used instead of the credit-card sized BCAS card used in set-top boxes. With such a smart card, available free to Japanese citizens, the IO Data GV-TV100 is effectively a set-top box packed into a USB key.
The product is likely to replace the current IOD One-seg dongle as the entry-level dongle priced tentatively between 6000 and 9000 JPY.  So, customers will be getting a more fully-featured product for a similar price to the OneSeg (QVGA resolution only) product that it is replacing.
