February Monday Night films:

February 6       Bill Cunningham New York (2010) U.S.; Not Rated

February 13     Midnight in Paris (2011) U.S.; Rated PG-13, Special Reception

February 20     Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) France; Not Rated

For decades, Bill Cunningham, a Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist and photographer, has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirées for the The New York Times Style section in his columns. Documenting uptown fixtures (Anna Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor, David Rockefeller-who all appear in the film out of their love for Bill), downtown eccentrics, and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place, and individual flair. In turn, Bill Cunningham New York is a funny and often-poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace.

A romantic comedy written and directed by Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris centers on a small group of Americans visiting the French capital who are forced to confront the deepest truths about their relationships. A.O. Scott of The New York Times states that the film, which stars Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates and France’s First Lady, Carla Bruni, credibly blends “whimsy and wisdom.” Midnight in Paris is the winner of the 2011 Golden Globe for Best Screenplay.

A documentary about the Chauvet Cave in southern France, Cave of Forgotten Dreams premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. The film includes footage from inside the cave and the nearby Pont d’Arc natural bridge, and includes interviews with various scientists and historians. Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times writes, “A sacred space where the human and the mystical effortlessly intertwine, and we are in Werner Herzog’s debt for that great gift.”

BIG ARTS Monday Night Film Series is supported by Series Sponsor Bank Of The Islands and Stan & Visnja Gembicki, Supporters George & Wendy’s Corner Grill, Jerry’s Foods of Sanibel, Sanibel Deli & Coffee Factory, and Sanibel Taxi.
