Feb. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- LITCHFIELD - Litchfield Bancorp President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Villanova was one of 22 representatives of the bank who returned to the classroom recently to teach financial literacy.

Villanova and his colleagues were at Litchfield Intermediate School on Jan. 10 to conduct a joint educational program with Junior Achievement of Southwestern New England as part of the bank's Community Counts program.

"JA in a Day" brought banking and business professionals together with 300 students in grades 4-6 for a morning of lessons on personal finance, entrepreneurship and the business world in general.

Students not only enjoyed the session, they got a lot out of it, according to Litchfield Intermediate School Principal Jennifer Murphy.

"There was a high level of comfort working with the Litchfield Bancorp volunteers, and as a result our students learned a great deal that will help them as they move on in their education," Murphy said. "The volunteers made lessons on things like credit rating and insurance interesting. That allowed students to be fully engaged in learning."

Villanova, who became President and CEO on Jan. 1, spent the morning with sixth-graders talking about community business, regional economy and how students can prepare themselves for the day when they will seek jobs.

"The kids were exceptional in their attitudes and participation," Villanova said. "It's a credit to the teachers and administration in how attentive they were. The experience was rewarding for me, because it has been a long time since I was in that kind of atmosphere."

Senior Vice President Paul McLaughlin stood at the front of a classroom delivering lessons on how business uses resources to create products and how the success of those products is measured. Like Villanova, McLaughlin was in a different kind of territory than he's accustomed to, but found much satisfaction in it.

"Being able to represent Litchfield Bancorp and work with the students was an unbelievable experience," McLaughlin said. "The students were polite, intelligent and energetic. Their teachers and parents are doing great jobs with them and should be proud of it."

Peter Blum, district manager for Junior Achievement of Southwestern New England said,

"We are very proud of the partnership with the bank. Together we’re helping to prepare these students to be contributing individuals in their own community.”

Litchfield Bancorp staff have volunteered in schools before as part of the Community Counts program, which focuses on arts enrichment in the schools, the importance of recycling, and family finance education.

Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to giving students in kindergarten through grade 12 the knowledge and skills they need to plot their economic success, plan for their future, and make intelligent academic and economic choices. JA reaches four million students per year in 124 markets across the U.S. and 5.8 students internationally.
