Feb. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Trucks and other cars have a lot of electronic sensors that monitor their engine, transmission, rear axle and other parts. These sensors transmit information to a main computer that makes your truck running in place. When one or several sensors send a trouble code to your truck's computer, the code will store in the device's memory and is able to read by a computer code reader. The devices, we call it on-board diagnostic (OBD) code readers, connect inside of your truck to a port similar to one found on a desktop computer.
You'll Need Flashlight, On-board diagnostic code reader, Pen, Paper and Repair manual
Shine a flashlight under your truck's steering wheel on the driver's side. Find out a plug-in connector, known as the data link connector (DLC), which is about 2 inches in length. The connector may include a plastic overlay that you will have to lift. Inside the connector, you will see multiple, smaller gold or silver plugs. If you don't see the plug-in connector on the driver's side, check the passenger’s side or around the center, bottom portion of your truck's instrument panel.
Plug the OBD code reader's connection cable into the plug-in connector. The cable will go in only one way.
Plug your truck's keys into the ignition and turn the ignition to the “On” position, but do not crank your truck. Turn on the code reader. The device's display will illuminate and begin reading your trucks stored computer codes if any is present. Note that certain brands of code readers do not require turning on your truck's ignition. Look up your code reader's manual for more information. Follow the code reader's on-screen commands to reset any stored codes. Write down the code(s) on a piece of paper and look up your truck's user manual or a repair manual for a description of the code(s).
