In Darwin’s Paw, Vern Westfall delivers a masterpiece of fiction while daring to dive head-first into dangerous waters. In his debut novel, Westfall deftly tackles the heroically daunting challenges of pitting religion versus religion, and science versus religion—and all on the on the powder keg of a formerly quiet college campus where things are about to devolve into chaos very, very quickly.
Set amid the backdrop of scenery and characters so familiar they could be any middle American hometown, Westfall builds a narrative filled with thought provoking questions and growing tension that is simply too much to ignore. With a keen eye for detail, Westfall turns a college lecture series into an international incident at a time when the world already seems to be just hanging on.
A Pakistani exchange student, a young America co-ed, a Colonel in unwitting service to U.S. Homeland Security—and his dog, Darwin—are all unwillingly swept up into events beyond their control, even recruited and used as pawns in a very dangerous game. And while only Darwin enters the struggle without prejudice, he becomes its first, unfortunate victim as God and the atom clash like never before.
“The clash of religion and politics is one of the great themes of literature, and Vern Westfall can add his name to a long list of distinguished authors—Rushdie, Eco, DeLillo, Mailer, to name just a few—who have grabbed these bulls by the horns and walked away not just unscathed, but better writers for their effort,” said Kathie McGuire, director of Brighton Publishing LLC.
Vern Westfall began writing late in life, after the introduction of spell check. He has a degree in Philosophy, has flown many special missions for the Air Force, has traveled the world, served as a foreign liaison officer, worked in civil and industrial engineering, designed over two hundred new homes, been a flight instructor, a college teacher, a high school teacher, and taught talented and gifted children. In spite of his many careers, he counts his greatest accomplishment as having been a single parent. Darwin’s Paw is Vern Westfall’s first novel. A memoir, The Philosophical Pilot, is scheduled to be released from Brighton Publishing later this year.
