By: Gulliver Schools The Golf Classic welcomed back a full course of 144 golfers. Ramping up the competition was the traditional contest “Are you Better than a Gulliver Student Golfer?” Stationed at different holes, student golfers Roman Lopez (sixth grade), John Ehrling and Zachary Buttrick (fourth grade), and Michelle Rodriguez (eighth grade) challenged tournament golfers to beat them in distance from the tee. More than 200 attended the awards dinner to see the tournament championship handed to Terry Willie, Eric Weiss, Carlos Velez and Ray Trout. Another golfer, Manuel Herrera, won a cash prize for scoring a hole-in-one. Guests also enjoyed winning an assortment of raffle prizes, including Kindle Fires, golf clubs, and a 51-inch TV. Mercedes Benz of Coral Gables, Deel Volvo and Williamson Cadillac HUMMER provided three different hole-in-one contests. Masseuses from Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa provide chair massages when the golfers came off the course. Each golfer received a plush gift bag complete with a golf travel bag. Winners of the tennis tournament, which were announced at a luncheon in the club’s Crystal Room, included Carlos Solis and Louis Thaler, who took home trophies in the men’s division. Claire Novy and Susie Valls were champions in the women’s and mixed doubles division, and Jene Andre and Sonia Decortes triumphed in the women’s division. Before the tournament, players were greeted with a gift bag, continental breakfast, silent auction and raffle prizes. The Raider Challenge benefits the Gulliver Booster Club, which provides funding to all athletic programs to support teams over and beyond the school athletic operating budget. Gulliver provides a host of athletic opportunities to meet the needs of students, from spectators and players to inter-scholastic competitors. While taking pride in a winning tradition, Gulliver’s Athletic program develops character, builds self-esteem, and teaches the values of teamwork and good sportsmanship.
