Background on Abalonetti:
One of the wharf's original restaurants, Abalonetti Seafood was opened in 1951 by two Sicilian families. Named for its signature squid dish that features calamari prepared in the style of an abalone (á la abalonetti), the restaurant quickly gained praise for unique calamari presentation. Jim Gilbert purchased Abalonetti in 2007 and Kevin Phillips, previously general manager for Pisto's restaurant group, became managing partner in 2008. In the following years, Phillips has dedicated himself to introducing Abalonetti to a new generation of seafood and calamari enthusiasts. Careful to preserve the restaurant’s traditional favorites while creating an engaging environment for both locals and tourists, the new Abalonetti Confidential will continue to be destination dining on Monterey’s wharf.
