By: Mont-Co TM club There were 15 members and 1 guest at the January 3rd, 2012 meeting. The Toastmaster was club president Maria Eilers. The two prepared speakers were former club president Bill Guthrie, who spoke on "Fire Safety" and new club member Mike Meier who told some "Silly Sledding Stories" that occurred on 'The Hill' next to Hillsboro High School. Both gave basic manual presentations. Meier is a 7 year veteran Toastmasters International member who has belonged to clubs in Texas, China and South Korea. Mike recently relocated back to his hometown of Hillsboro from Seoul, South Korea where he still belongs to the Advanced Toastmasters Club of Seoul. While Meier thoroughly entertained the audience, Guthrie kept them on the edge's of their seats for another reason entirely. He shared some sad but true facts about house fires. One such fact is that 42% of all fires are caused from cooking, so always stay in the kitchen while grilling, broiling or frying food! Mike has acheived the highest educational award that one can achieve in Toastmasters, that of the DTM or Distinguished Toastmaster. Meier is now the second member of the club to hold the DTM award, along with Todd Austin from Virden. There were 17 members at the January 17th, 2012 meeting. The Toastmaster was club secretary Myra Mollett. The two prepared speakers were Jamie Powers and Ron Lawrence. Both gave Toastmasters basic manual presentations. Jamie is an educator whose talk was an informative presentation about CTE (career & technical education) which was formerly known as vocational schooling. Ron's speech was an inspirational talk called "The Power of One". The take home message was that any of us could be the 'one' person who plants a seed that could spark greatness in another! The club will next meet at the Challacombe House in Hillsboro on Tuesday February 7th from 7 to 8 PM. The prepared speakers will be Todd Austin and Jackie Rakers. The Master of Ceremonies will be Mike Meier. All area residents who are interested in becoming better leaders and / or communicators are encouraged to attend.
