Baldo, a big, red birthday balloon hopes to find a friend and searches all over the world. He is cruelly rebuffed but does not give up. One day, after hair- raising adventures, he finally meets a true friend - but so totally different from what he had expected.

This picture book is intended to help children persevere on their hunt to find themselves and not be afraid to explore new friendships and new options. Speyer feels that children will be able to relate to Baldo and his journey for friendship. Bullying and hostilities are a common occurrence in children's lives, and the message of perseverance and finding friends different than you can make an impact on children facing such obstacles.
