Imani Kairee hails from a small town in Ansonia,Connecticut, started musically performing at 13 years old. And at the advice of a friend was taken to a recording studio at 14 to audition, to see if she really had talent.The studio producer/engineer expected a singer not an MC when this tiny voiced young lady showed up. " I used to always write to all MOB DEEP tracks, they used to laugh and say I was way to serious.I started out with a mix tape and I wrote" Get Mani" lyrics to a Lil Kim track, which a lot of people loved and was produced by Steve Issacs of Smoke Studios.There at Smokehouse and with her manager, Imani Kairee developed the tough skin needed for the music business.
As Imani Kairee started to perform in the under ground music circuits, she started to gain respect of the male rappers in CT. You could always see her front and center cheering on everyone that performed and making her presence known to the promoters and the DJ's.People always asked if she was going to sing"Nah I rap" was the nonchalant response. And after seeing her perform with such ease and talent, they were impressed with her.She was always also a regular at the youth and teen events .
No venue or event was to big or small for Imani Kairee who once played at an event for 3 people. " Something happened in the communication of the promoters, and some of the other bands left.Those three people took they're time out to travel there." I love my fans!"
I have had promoters not pay me as they should, equipment break downs like a mic going out etc you know the norm in business she laughs. Once during a performance the mic went dead, but she just saw it as a chance to prove her professionalism by not freaking out." I have it on tape me still performing to a dead mic and them switching one in and one out." She says laughing.
Her alieness comes from the fact that she has always been different not on the black side or white side of the music genres always the gray like an alien. A lot of times the outcast style wise Imani Kairee embraces that responsibility fully. "My sound,looks,my hair and everything else I do is me Imani Kairee".But sometimes people that are already in the public eye come out with the same ideas, that's the most annoying part. This is me,not anyone else so don't mistake it",she quips. I only strive to give the people that have an interest in me and my music just Imani Kairee. People talked about me,but now are copying me, she smiles. My hair styles always get stares or conversation.
