Considering we spend a third of our lives in bed, it’s worth spending the time and effort to make sure you get the right bed for you. So if you want to be savvy on sleep, here are Alistair Hughes’ (Owner and Director of Savoir Beds) top six tips for choosing a bed…

1. Where do you start looking?:
Start by thinking about the bed you’re in ... How do you sleep in it? (side, back, front, moving a lot?!). Do you get aches, pins & needles, other problems?  How big is it?  Does your partner disturb you?  Is it too hot, or too cold?  If you sleep well, or badly, when staying somewhere else (hotel, friend's place etc) think, how is that bed different?  Often we don't know the answers without thinking about it when we are in bed!  Then, wearing lose clothing, go out to try some beds.  Take your time, lie down in lots of positions, take a book to read!

2. Choosing a mattress - What should you look for?:
Great support, and that does not mean firm.  Something that takes your shape without sagging.  Allow yourself to sink in ... that is the only way the mattress can support you in, for example, the lower back area.  Don't assume that you and your partner will want the same thing ... you should each have the right support on your own side. Savoir’s ‘zip-link’ mattresses are essentially two separate mattress joined together so that you and your partner receive the correct level of support!

Make sure the mattress breathes. You sleep more deeply if your body temperature is normal, and man-made materials tend to raise your temperature.  Hair (ideally long, curled horsetail) and wool are designed to wick moisture, giving you a perfect sleeping environment.

Top tip for a bad back: Make sure you sink in so your hips and shoulders are accommodated and your spine is in its natural position.

3. How long should a bed last?

4. How much should I be spending?:
