Whittier recently appeared on the Fox 25 TV Morning Show to discuss how to “Increase Your Awareness: Self Defense Success.” The appearance was a follow up to his previous segment on the show in which he outlined his Bully Prevention program for kids and teens: http://www.myfoxboston.com/
In the self defense awareness segment, Whittier was interviewed by Fox co-anchor Elizabeth Hopkins on his “Triple A” self protection model, which focuses as heavily on strategies to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations as it does on what to do if a physical assault does occur.
In the earlier Bully Prevention segment with co-anchor Gene Lavanchy, Whittier shared the tips and strategies used in his youth martial arts and character development program to help provide kids with the personal resources and confidence to responsibly handle physical and psychological forms of bullying. This is the same program that Whittier and his staff share with local school systems as well.
“Bullying has always been around, but it has become more sophisticated due to techology and it is now more widespread than ever,” Whittier explains. “Schools and lawmakers have been all over the issue in recent years, but what we do is more hands-on… we go beyond policy and culture-building to focus on the real, lived experience of each individual child, and teach them how to deal appropriately with all forms of bullying – physical bullying, cyber bullying, and others.”
He also points out that bullying – including its physical forms – has no borders, but exists even in the best areas and schools. “While we teach both kids and adults how to control and manage everything to the best of their ability before a confrontation turns physical, the sad reality is that most are completely unprepared if something does happen. One of our students, for example, was able to successfully defend himself when he was randomly targeted and assaulted by a self-proclaimed gang of boys from his area; it turned out that the same group had badly hurt another boy from his school before they happned upon him. Fortunately he had the skills and awareness to handle the situation.”
Whittier is currently finalizing his book, Take the Power Back: How to Give Your Child the Confidence and Knowledge To Handle Bullies Responsibly, a resource designed to assist parents in “bully proofing” their children.
