PRLog -- GlaxoSmithKline is the world's third largest pharmaceutical company and specializes in the production of treatments and vaccines for major disease areas including asthma, virus control, infections, mental health, diabetes and digestive conditions. In addition to these main areas, the company also has a large consumer health care division which produces and markets oral healthcare and nutritional products and over-the-counter medicines. While GlaxoSmithKline’
s product offering is large, there corporate mission “to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer,” has led them to occupy a leading role in vaccine development. In that role, the company has developed several notable vaccines, including:
1. Engerix B: Engerix B is a vaccine indicated for immunization against infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus. The vaccine is intended for persons of all ages but treatment dosages vary by age. The treatment is administered by a series of three .5 ml intramuscular injections for people aged up to 19 years and three 1 ml injections for those 20 years and older.
2. Pediarix:
Specially designed for children, this combination vaccine is indicated for active immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, infection caused by all known subtypes of hepatitis B virus, and poliomyelitis. Pediarix is administered in 3 doses and can be given to children aged six months to seven years.
3. Infanrix:
Infanrix is a vaccine indicated for active immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis as a 5-dose series in infants and children 6 weeks to 7 years of age. The vaccine is administered in a series of 5 shots consisting of one shot each at 2, 4, and 6 months of age and two booster shots, one at 15-20 months and another at 4-7 years of age.
4. Hiberix:
Indicated for active immunization as a booster dose for the prevention of invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenza type b, Hiberix is approved for use in children aged 15 months to four years.
5. Boostrix:
Approved for people aged 10 years and older, Boostrix is administered in a single dose and is indicated for active booster immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. Boostrix has recently been approved for those over 65 years of age. It is the only TDAP vaccine so approved. Please refer to previous article about “cocooning”
to protect newborns from Pertussis.
6. Fluarix and Flulaval: GSK also offers these two flu vaccines. Again, flu vaccine is the vaccine most declined by Americans. As seasonal flu causes thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations every year in America alone, we are happy to be able to offer a full array of flu vaccines to our members.
7. Rotarix:
Rotarix is a vaccine indicated for the prevention of rotavirus gastroenteritis. The vaccine is administered orally and is approved for the use in infants 6 to 24 weeks of age. Rotarix is noteworthy in that the course of immunization takes only 2 doses, it can be given at an earlier age that other products and it has first dose efficacy of almost 90%.
8. Cervarix:
Cervarix is a vaccine designed to protect against certain types of cancer-causing human papillomavirus (also known as HPV). The vaccine specifically protects against infection from HPV types 16 and 18, which together cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases. The vaccine is administered intramuscular in 3 doses and is approved for use in females aged 9 to 25 years of age.
9. Twinrix:
Indicated for the prevention of disease caused by hepatitis A virus and infection by all known subtypes of hepatitis B virus. This combination vaccine (the only one to combine protection against Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B) is administered in a series of three shots and is approved for people aged 18 and older. There is also a rapid dose regime to help attain protection sooner.
10. Kinrix:
Kinrix is a combination vaccine including DTaP (Infanrix) and IPV and is indicated for 4-6 year olds for the fifth doses of DTaP and the fourth dose of IPV.
