Children and Sunscreen - Importance of sun safety

As parents and children head out into the sun, it is important to remember that children need an appropriate amount of sunscreen applied to their skin.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 25, 2012 - East Lansing, MI – As parents and children head out into the sun, it is important to remember that children need an appropriate amount of sunscreen applied to their skin. Research is suggesting that children are not applying the recommended thickness to their body when it comes to sunscreen. If sunscreen is not applied liberally, it does not work properly.

Parents should set a positive example and start promoting healthy sun protection habits. A tan is actually a negative sign on the skin and children should not develop a lifelong tradition of seeking this form of exposure. Children that have been sunburned at an early age are nearly twice as likely to develop skin cancer as they become adults.

According to a recent study published January 23, 2011 online in Pediatrics and shared in the Los Angeles Times by Shari Roan, “Researchers studied fifth-grade children in Massachusetts in 2004 and then re-surveyed the same 360 children three years later. In the first survey, more than half of the kids said they had experienced at least one sunburn, and this rate did not change three years later.

Dr. Marcy Street, founder of Doctor’s Approach in Lansing MI, and the nation’s first African American female MOHS surgeon, understands the need for sun safety education among parents. “As a parent myself, I realize how impactful my influence is, and it may affect my children’s lifestyle in the future. Children will automatically develop attitudes about tanning, sunscreen and skin cancer early on and are easily influenced by others. The more knowledge they are armed with, the better”.

In addition parents educating children about the proper use of sunscreen there are also other forms of sun protection, such as hats, clothing, and shade.

Dr. Marcy Street is a board certified, fellowship trained dermatologist, specializing in skin cancer, skin cancer prevention, and Mohs skin cancer surgery.
