Before the railroad cam to America they were popular in the 1600’s in England. As America continued to grow and settlers moved in there was a need to transport people and goods. Before the railroad there were steamships and privately owned toll roads. But the railroad provided a unique opportunity for people and communities. Roads were made with wooden rails referred to as “wagon ways”. Wagon ways were built to assist horse-drawn wagons and this was much quicker than the traveling on dirt roads.
