Jan. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- There was a time when steam engines were king. At one point it was only a dream to connect the East and West coasts of the United States. The railroad was slow going due to the indecision of location from lawmakers. Northern representatives preferred a northern route and Southern wanted a southern route. Slavery was another issue that further complicated the matter. When the Civil War broke out Congress rethought the transcontinental railroad mainly because they thought it would be good for the cause of the Union. The rest as they is history. In January of 1863 groundbreaking ceremonies took place in Sacramento and the Union Pacific began in December. Edward Leard goes on to mention that the progress on the Central Pacific end was stalled due the reputation of silver being discovered on Nevada. Railroad workers were transfixed on the idea of striking it rich so they left in hopes of finding silver. Finding workers was a challenge so they brought in Chinese laborers to try and get the railway completed. There were complications on the Union Pacific end due to Indian raids that were moving across the prairies. Edward Leard writes that it would take 6 more years before the two railroad segments met at Promontory Point, Utah. Edward Leard adds that that final tie was secured with a bronze spike. As time went on traffic took another turn with the introduction of interstate highways and air travel adds Edward Leard. Sadly the railroad became a thing of the past and many segments were taken and used for scrap metal. Before the death of the railroad they were the King of the road. Before the railroad cam to America they were popular in the 1600’s in England.  As America continued to grow and settlers moved in there was a need to transport people and goods. Before the railroad there were steamships and privately owned toll roads. But the railroad provided a unique opportunity for people and communities. Railroads were around even before the 1600’s. According to Edward lead the earliest railroads made their humble beginnings in Germany in 1550. It would take another 250 years before the steam engine mad its appearance. Roads were made with wooden rails referred to as “wagon ways”. Wagon ways were built to assist horse-drawn wagons and this was much quicker than the traveling on dirt roads. Who built the first locomotive steam engine? To find out log on to: http://trackingtraincollectorsplus.com/the-role-of-the-st....  Many men worked by the sweat of their brow hauling tons of iron for many miles. Working the railroad was hard work and the men were not paid a handsome wage. The father of American railroads tested his theories on steam locomotion with a circular track built on his New Jersey estate.
