Considered one of Verdi’s greatest accomplishments, Rigoletto has enthralled audiences worldwide with memorable arias like La donna è mobile since its premiere performance at La Fenice in Venice in 1851. This three-act opera is set in Mantua, Italy, in the Sixteenth century and tells the story of Rigoletto, a court jester to the Duke, and his daughter, Gilda. One night, the Duke, a serial philanderer, and his courtiers follow Rigoletto to the house of his daughter, whose identity Rigoletto has kept secret since her birth and whom the Duke and courtiers suspect may be his lover. Once Rigoletto has left, the Duke enters and plays a trick on Rigoletto by seducing Gilda. When Rigoletto learns of the Duke’s visit and his daughter’s wishes to be with him, Rigoletto vows to seek revenge upon the Duke for destroying his daughter’s innocence.
