Have you asked yourself the following questions?

•         What’s happening to the global economy?

Itinerary

10:00 AM – WORKSHOP: Protect Your Wealth and Retirement from Inflation
•   Is the Canadian economy heading into a period of inflation?
•   How will inflation impact your wealth and retirement income?
•   What investments offer the best historical hedge against inflation?
•   How much of your portfolio should be allocated to inflation hedging?

Learn from registered financial advisors about how alternative investments in commodities, real estate and farmland can create a diversified portfolio of inflation hedging assets. Interview two leading investment managers in an intimate, interactive workshop about how their investment products might provide your portfolio with inflation protection and wealth preservation qualities.

11:00 AM – WORKSHOP: Using Flow-Through for Tax-Advantaged Investing
•   Are flow-through investments a better choice than RRSPs for tax-advantaged investing?
•   How do diversified flow-through funds reduce the risk of flow-through investing?
•   Are Canadian mining and oil & gas exploration companies a sound investment?
•   Are flow-through investment funds right for every investor?

While most investors are familiar with the tax advantages of RRSP investing, flow-through investments are Canada’s little-known tax deduction found in Section 66 of the Income Tax Act. Flow-through funds offer high-income and high net worth individuals throughout Canada the highest possible level of safe tax sheltering, together with exposure to gold, uranium and other resource exploration companies.

1:00 PM – WORKSHOP: Create a Diversified Portfolio of Real Estate Income Investments
•   How much income will you need to retire?
•   How does real estate cash flow compare to the income generating capacity of stocks and bonds?
•   What the difference between a Mortgage Investment Corporation (MIC) and a REIT?
•   How much of your portfolio should be allocated to income generated by real estate investments?

Real estate provides strong and consistent cash flow for investors. It is an important component of any portfolio and a generally reliable source for retirement income.  There is an abundance of professionally managed real estate products available to investors offering exposure to a range of real estate assets with varying degrees of risk and income generating possibilities. This workshop will help investors gain the knowledge they need to create a diversified portfolio of real estate-backed income investments.

2:00 PM – WORKSHOP: Understanding, Identifying & Managing Risk
•   What is your risk tolerance?
•   How do investment managers identify and manage risk?
•   How do alternative investments reduce overall portfolio risk?
•   Why do mutual fund diversification strategies often fail to reduce market risk?

Alternative investments come with unique risks, the most prominent being liquidity risk. Every investor needs to understand these risks in the context of his/her personal risk tolerance and investment objectives. This workshop will explain the nature of the risk-reward trade-off, identify sources of risk found in alternative investments, and examine specific risk management strategies deployed by investment managers. While risk is inherent to investing, alternative investments can reduce risk by creating portfolio diversification using assets classes with low correlations to traditional stock and bond investments.

3:00 PM – WORKSHOP: Multiple Options for Tax-Advantaged Investing
•   What tax-advantaged investments must be avoided?
•   How can I use RRSPs, TFSAs, REITs and flow-through investments to legally reduce my taxes?
•   What happened to the public royalty trusts?
•   How do I make sure my accountant understands the many options for tax-advantaged investing?

Canadian investors have access to a number of legitimate ways to reduce and defer taxes. RRSP accounts have been available since 1957 and were created to encourage retirement saving by deferring the taxation of invested income until retirement. TFSA accounts were created in 2008 and allow investment income and capital gains to be generated tax free even when withdrawn. Real Estate Income Trusts (REITs) survived the changes to the public royalty trusts that went into effect in 2011 and allow REITs to continue to avoid double taxation by flowing income directly to investors. Flow-through shares were created by Section 66 of the Income Tax Act as a means of financing resource exploration while providing a tax-advantaged investment for Canadians. This workshop will explore these options for tax-advantaged investing and empower investors to work with their financial advisor and accountant on a personal tax strategy.

4:00 PM – WORKSHOP:  Investing in Private Equity through Managed Funds
•   How much of your portfolio should be allocated to private and public equities?
•   What are the advantages of investing in a managed private equity fund over a traditional public equity fund like a mutual fund?
•   What are the unique risks associated with private equity?
•   Where are the growth markets for businesses in this uncertain global economy?

Private equity gives investors exposure to the returns of operating businesses that are not traded on a stock exchange. Investing in private equity is an alternative strategy to investing in shares of publicly traded companies. The lack of liquidity associated with investing in private businesses allows fund managers to capture a “liquidity discount,” which is to say that fund managers are able to acquire cash flow positive businesses at a discount to what these companies would be worth on the public markets. Investing in private businesses is an alternative investing strategy that can create diversification within the portion of your portfolio allocated to public market equities, thereby reducing overall risk.
