Jan. 21, 2012 - PRLog -- UVU announced today its plans for a Cesar Chavez Day March.  Cesar Chavez was a civil rights and farm labor leader.  He was a community organizer and is an icon to the Hispanic community.  He inspired a whole generation of people to stand up for their rights and challenge the status quo in a peaceful manner.  The UVU Cesar Chavez Day March will take place on March 31, 2012.  It will be followed by a solidarity rally.

In January 2011, Rep. Tryon Lewis of Odessa introduced HB 505 that would have eliminated Cesar Chavez Day in Texas.  In the past Legislator have also attack Cesar Chavez and other civil rights leaders in Texas school text books.  Our efforts are to educate the community on Cesar Chavez contributions and to insure that Legislators do remove Cesar Chavez from our history.

César Estrada Chávez March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993) was an American farm worker, labor leader, and civil rights activist who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW).

A Mexican American, Chávez became the best known Latino civil rights activist, and was strongly promoted by the American labor movement, which was eager to enroll Hispanic members. His public-relations approach to unionism and aggressive but nonviolent tactics made the farm workers' struggle a moral cause with nationwide support. By the late 1970s, his tactics had forced growers to recognize the UFW as the bargaining agent for 50,000 field workers in California and Florida. However, by the mid-1980s membership in the UFW had dwindled to around 15,000. - Wikipedia
