Follow on Google News | The National Ballet of Cuba’s DON QUIXOTEA revolutionary work from one of the world’s greatest classical ballet companies
Choreographed by the legendary Alicia Alonso from the original work by Marius Petipa, and set to the music of Ludwig Minkus, these performances will stand as the ultimate memorial to David Y.H. Lui, Vancouver’s long-time impresario, who was working on this project when he passed away last September. “David was so passionate about bringing the National Ballet of Cuba to Vancouver,” says Brent Belsher, his friend and business partner, who is now producing the performances on his own. “Don Quixote is the National Ballet of Cuba’s signature ballet. No other company owns the piece as the Cubans do today. Seeing it on the stage is something extremely special and David wanted to bring the show to Vancouver audiences.” Under the guidance of Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso as Director of the National Ballet of Cuba, this production of Don Quixote effortlessly blends the drama of the classic tale, with the athletic grace of the Cuban dancers to create a passionate and colourful portrayal of the most famous son of La Mancha. The National Ballet of Cuba is recognized as one of the world’s greatest ballet companies – add in the live accompaniment of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and the four performances at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre form the signature classical ballet being performed in Vancouver this year. “Technical fireworks with brilliant charm and awesome ease.” Daily Telegraph “Brilliant dancers seem to be the norm in Ballet Nacional de Cuba, which regularly produces international stars.” The New York Times Tickets for Don Quixote range from $47 to $97 (plus taxes and service charges) and are available at Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.ca, 1-855-985-ARTS( NOTE: These performances are not part of any other dance or ballet series being presented in Vancouver this season. Tickets for Don Quixote must be purchased separately. -30- End
