Martindale-Hubbell® has prepared a Law Firm Ranking for the first time in their 140-year history, and Fortune Magazine worked with the organization to compile the list that appeared in Fortune’s “2012 Investor’s Guide” issue, released on December 26, 2011. More than 250,000 law firms in Martindale’s registry were reviewed and ranked in preparation for the 2012 Investor’s Guide. The rankings are based on a firm’s percentage of Martindale-Hubbell AV-rated attorneys, the highest rating one can receive from the peer review rating system. An AV peer review rating shows that a lawyer has reached the height of professional excellence. He or she has usually practiced law for many years and is recognized for the highest levels of skill and integrity.

There are two components to each Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating: a legal ability rating and a general ethical standards rating. The legal ability rating takes into consideration the standard of professional ability in the area where the lawyer practices, the lawyer's expertise and other professional qualifications. The general ethical standards rating indicates adherence to professional standards of conduct and ethics, reliability, diligence and other criteria relevant to the discharge of professional responsibilities.
