The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that each year, as many as 9 million individuals fall victim to identity theft. Individuals and organizations can better protect themselves by properly destroying documents that contain private information before they are disposed. In 2011 alone, Access destroyed and recycled over 10,000 tons of paper containing sensitive information from businesses and individuals.
Individuals from surrounding communities are encouraged to bring their paper records and documents that are no longer needed to their nearest Access location for free, secure destruction on January 27th. Examples of the types of documents that individuals need to properly destroy before disposal include: bank statements, credit card statements, utility bills, cancelled checks, pre-approved credit card forms and any other documentation that contains personal data. The first 5 boxes of materials, per individual, will be destroyed free of charge. Documents submitted for destruction will be securely shredded by Access and all of the resulting materials will be recycled.
On January 27, 2012, Access will sponsor no-cost shred events at locations across the United States, including: Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin. A list of participating National Data Privacy Day shred locations is available online at:
"Access is proud to participate in the promotion of National Data Privacy for the third year running," said David Gesinger, Executive Vice President, Operations, Access Information Management. "Introducing individuals to secure data destruction and recycling helps prevent identity theft and diverts materials from growing local landfills. This event is a true representation of our mission and core values - making a positive contribution to the communities we serve."
Access is a member of the National Association of Information Destruction (NAID).
